Sutcliffe began his writing career with a novel about school life entitled New Boy (1996), although he is best-known for his book, Are You Experienced? (1997), a pre-university gap year novel, in which a group of young Brits travel to India without really knowing what to expect or what to do there.

He has written two further novels for adults, The Love Hexagon (2000) about six young Londoners who have difficulty committing themselves to a relationship, and Whatever Makes You Happy (2008), about interfering mothers and men who refuse to grow up.

He has also written his first YA novel, The Wall (2013), which was also published as a novel for adults, and has written a children's book.

Sutcliffe went to school at Haberdashers', where he was in the same year as Sacha Baron Cohen (aka Ali G) and Nick Goldsmith. He is married to the novelist Maggie O'Farrell, whom he met whilst an undergraduate at Emmanuel College, Cambridge in the early 1990s.
