Mortal Engines comes to the big screen

If you enjoy danger, adrenaline and big landscapes in films, then you’re in for a treat with the new Mortal Engines film, coming to cinemas this December.

With cities that move, lots of action and fantastic effects, it's sure to be a big hit! Mortal Engines the film is based on Philip Reeve's series of the same name, and we'd recommend reading the series before you see the films.

The first book in the quartet was published in 2001 so it's taken a while to get to screen.

The screen writers - Fran Walsh, Philippa Boyens and Peter Jackson - were busy with The Lord of the Rings films. Like those, Mortal Engines has also been filmed in New Zealand.

Mortal Engines is set in a post-apocalyptic world, where cities are massive, predatory machines that move about the barren landscape, 'eating up' smaller cities.

Tom, a Londoner, gets in the way of the masked Hester's attempt to kill Thaddeus Valentine, a powerful man she blames for her mother's murder. Both Hester and Tom end up on the run; Thaddeus wants them both dead.
