Carnegie and Kate Greenaway nominations


Nominations for the 2020 CILIP Carnegie and Kate Greenaway Medals have been announced, with more than 162 books nominated for both medals. The longlists will be announced in February 2020.

The final shortlists will be announced on 19 March 2020, when schools across the country will begin to shadow the awards. Voting for the Shadowers' Choice Awards will run from 1-10 June 2020, with the announcements of the medal winners and Shadowers' Choice announcements on 17 June 2020.

91 books are in contention for the CILIP Carnegie Medal, which is awarded to a book written in English for children and young people that creates an outstanding reading experience through writing. There are 71 books longlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal, many of which are also nominated for the Carnegie Medal; the CILIP Kate Greenaway Medal recognises a book that creates an outstanding reading experience through illustration.

Among the titles nominated for the Carnegie Medal are Kirsty Applebaum's The Middler (Nosy Crow); Sarah Crossan's Toffee (Bloomsbury); Tamsin Winter's Jemima Small Versus the Universe (Usborne); Sharon Dogar's Monsters (Andersen Press); Julia Green's The House of Light (OUP); and Sharon Gosling's The Golden Butterfly (Stripes).

On the Kate Greenaway Medal list are included: Chris Naylor_ballesteros's The Suitcase (Nosy Crow); Quill Soup by Alan Durant and Dale Blankenaar (illus) (Tiny Owl); Shaun Taylor's Tales from the Inner City (Walker Books); The Afterwards by AF Harrold and Emily Gravett (illus), which is also nominated for the Carnegie Medal; and Morag Hood's Brenda is a Sheep (Two Hoots).

Alongside nominations from CILIP members, the list of 162 books includes nominations from eight external bodies: BookTrust, CLPE, CommonWord, English & Media Centre, IBBY, Inclusive Minds, National Literacy Trust and RNIB.
